About the author

Born in Wimbledon in 1872, Hugh Arnold was an English stained glass artist and writer. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and then at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he trained under the influential stained-glass artist Christopher Whall.

Arnold designed stained glass for James Powell & Sons and also produced independent work, building a reputation in the Arts and Crafts world. Alongside his studio practice, he wrote Stained Glass of the Middle Ages in England and France, a book that reflects both his historical interest and his practical understanding of the medium.

His life was cut short in 1915, when he was killed while serving at Gallipoli during the First World War. Though his career was brief, his writing remains a clear and inviting introduction to the art of stained glass.
