About the author

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Howard Elmer Wandrei (September 24, 1909 – September 5, 1956) was an American writer and artist. Reliable reference sources agree that he produced more than 200 stories, with work appearing in magazines such as Weird Tales, Astounding, Esquire, and Black Mask.

His fiction ranged widely, from horror and fantasy to detective and science fiction, and he also wrote under several pen names, including Robert Coley and H. W. Guernsey. Alongside his magazine work, he became especially noted for his illustrations, many of them connected with books by his brother Donald Wandrei.

Though not as widely known today as some of his pulp-era contemporaries, his career shows just how versatile magazine writers of the period could be: equally at home with eerie tales, crime stories, and striking visual art.
