About the author

Born in 1820, he was an English wood engraver, illustrator, and author with Quaker family roots. After his father died in 1827, his family moved to Easebourne near Midhurst in West Sussex, where he developed an early fascination with local history, engraving, and printing.

He was precocious even by Victorian standards. While still very young, he produced Juvenile Researches and then wrote, illustrated, engraved, and printed The History and Antiquities of Horsham and its Vicinity, a notable early county-history work created when he was still in his teens. He later published other books and travel writing, including Passages of a Half Century.

He married Jane Ellen Young in 1849 and returned to London a few years later. He died of consumption in 1864, aged just 44, leaving behind a small but striking body of work that blends antiquarian curiosity with the hands-on craft of bookmaking.
