About the author

Born in Millerton, New York, in 1851, Howard B. Grose built a varied career as a minister, writer, teacher, and editor. Sources on his life describe him as an American Baptist minister and journalist, and also note his work as a hymn writer and author.

His career moved through both education and publishing. He served as president of the University of South Dakota from 1890 to 1892, later taught history at the University of Chicago, worked as assistant editor of The Watchman in Boston, and then became editorial secretary for the American Baptist Home Mission Society. He also edited Missions for many years, which helped make him a familiar voice in Baptist publishing.

Grose wrote on religion and American society, including books such as Aliens or Americans? and The Incoming Millions. Those titles reflect one of the major themes in his work: the meeting point between faith, immigration, and national life in the early twentieth century. He died in 1939.
