Born in New York City in 1899, Howard Augustus Meyerhoff built a career that combined research, teaching, and scientific service. He studied geology at the University of Illinois and Columbia University, and he later became known as an American geologist with a gift for both scholarship and organization.
He taught geology at Smith College from 1925 to 1949, helping train students during a formative period for the earth sciences. His research included work on the geology of Puerto Rico, and he also took on broader leadership roles in American science.
After leaving Smith, he served with the American Association for the Advancement of Science as administrative secretary and as editor-in-chief of Science. Later work included service with the Scientific Manpower Commission and leadership in university geology programs, reflecting a career that reached well beyond his own research.
