About the author

Born Hildegarde Streufert and later known as Hildegarde Streufert Crane, she built a career around clothing, design, and teaching. Her early academic work included research in clothing and textiles, and she went on to become a University Professor at Arizona State University, where she served for 34 years.

At ASU, she joined the Home Economics faculty in 1961 and later helped introduce an interdisciplinary Interior Design and Decorative Arts program linking art and home economics. She served as program chair until 1985 and was recognized with numerous awards for her teaching and leadership.

As an author, she is remembered for It's Fun to Sew with a Sewing Machine, a beginner-friendly sewing book that has continued to find readers through reprints and library collections. She died on July 30, 2009, at age 84.
