Best remembered as one of the first major Dutch writers to create poetry especially for children, this 18th-century author mixed warmth, moral reflection, and everyday scenes in a way that stayed popular for generations. His verses helped shape children’s literature in the Netherlands and are still recognized today.

by Hieronymus van Alphen
Born in Gouda on August 8, 1746, Hieronymus van Alphen studied law and worked as a jurist in Utrecht, Leiden, and The Hague. Alongside his legal and public career, he built a lasting literary reputation as a poet and writer.
He is especially known for Kleine gedigten voor kinderen, published between 1778 and 1782. These poems were written for young readers at a time when that was still unusual in Dutch literature, and they helped make him one of the best-known early authors of children’s poetry in the Netherlands.
Van Alphen died in The Hague on April 2, 1803. Although he also worked as a legal scholar and public official, he is remembered above all for bringing poetry closer to children and everyday family life.
