About the author

Born in Brüx, Austria-Hungary, in 1889, he came to the United States as a child and later earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago. Although trained in botany, he built his career in journalism instead, first working in Chicago and then moving to New Orleans.

Deutsch spent most of his professional life with the States and later the States-Item, where he worked from 1918 until 1970 and served as an associate editor, chief editorial writer, and daily columnist. He also wrote for national magazines including The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Collier’s, and The Literary Digest.

His books reflect the subjects he knew best: vivid personalities, Louisiana history, and New Orleans culture. Among them are The Incredible Yanqui: The Career of Lee Christmas, The Huey Long Murder Case, and Brennan’s New Orleans Cookbook, a book that blends recipes with the story of one of the city’s most famous restaurants.
