About the author

Born in 1889 in Brüx, then part of Austria-Hungary and now Most in the Czech Republic, he moved to Cincinnati as a small child and later earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago.

After beginning his newspaper career in Chicago, he moved to New Orleans in the 1910s and became a longtime writer for the New Orleans States-Item. Over the years he also contributed to national magazines including The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Collier's Weekly, and Literary Digest.

He is remembered for nonfiction rooted in people and place, including books such as The Incredible Yanqui, The Huey Long Murder Case, and Brennan's New Orleans Cookbook. He died in 1970 while traveling to New York, leaving behind a body of work closely tied to the history and character of New Orleans.
