Remembered as a Dutch architect with a deep interest in historic buildings, he also wrote about old churches, farmhouses, and country-house design. His books reflect both a designer’s eye and a strong sense of architectural heritage.

by Herman van der Kloot Meijburg
Born in 1875 in Oudshoorn, Herman van der Kloot Meijburg trained at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam and went on to build a busy practice as an architect in the Netherlands. He became especially known for church restorations, as well as for designing churches, schools, housing, and country houses.
Alongside his architectural work, he published books on traditional Dutch building culture, including studies of old churches and old farmhouses. That makes him an unusual figure for listeners and readers today: not only a practicing architect, but also a writer who helped record and explain the character of older buildings.
He died in 1961 in Scheveningen. His writing remains interesting for anyone drawn to architecture, local history, and the changing shape of everyday life in the Netherlands.
