About the author

Born on June 11, 1823, in Stora Malm, Sweden, Johan Herman Hofberg first trained in medicine and worked as a district physician before turning fully toward writing and historical research. His interests ranged widely, but he became especially known for antiquarian work and for gathering material about Swedish folklore, local history, and cultural traditions.

Hofberg wrote and edited books that brought together legends, regional descriptions, and biographical material, making the past feel lively and accessible to ordinary readers. He is also associated with major reference and historical works, including biographical compilations that remained useful long after his lifetime.

He later worked at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and received a doctoral degree in philosophy. Hofberg died in Stockholm on April 28, 1883, but his work still offers a rich window into how 19th-century Sweden remembered its people, places, and stories.
