About the author

Born in Dorpat (now Tartu, Estonia) on August 11, 1871, he became a German literary scholar, author, librarian, university teacher, and politician in Thuringia. Sources consistently describe him as a deeply educated figure whose work crossed literature, scholarship, and civic life.

He studied a wide range of subjects, including theology, history, geography, economics, and German studies. He later taught in Hanover and worked as a librarian in Gotha, and he also wrote under the pseudonym Caligula Quitte.

Reference works note that he wrote realistic novels about school life in a pietistic community, which helps explain the thoughtful, experience-based tone associated with his fiction. He died in Neudietendorf, Thuringia, on December 10, 1945.
