About the author

Founded in 1896, the Herkimer County Historical Society was organized to collect, preserve, and publish the history of the region once known as Tryon County and later Herkimer County. Judge Robert Earl, who helped establish the society, served as its first president.

The society is based in Herkimer, New York, and is closely associated with the 1884 Suiter House Museum and the adjacent Eckler building. Its mission reaches well beyond one house museum: it maintains historical collections and a research library with books, newspapers, maps, genealogies, manuscripts, portraits, and other materials that document the county's past.

As an authoring body, the society is best known for preserving and publishing regional history rather than writing in a single personal voice. That makes its work especially valuable for listeners interested in local history, community memory, and the kinds of documents that keep a place's story alive.
