by Herkimer County Historical Society
Founded in 1896, the Herkimer County Historical Society grew out of an effort by local civic leaders to collect and protect the region’s records, objects, and stories. Its mission centers on discovering, preserving, and publishing the history of Herkimer County and the area once known as Tryon County.
Today the society is based in Herkimer, New York, at the Historic Four Corners. Its museum is housed in the 1884 Suiter Building, and its library and research resources support visitors interested in genealogy, local history, and the everyday life of the Mohawk Valley.
Rather than being known for a single authorial voice, the society’s work reflects many contributors over time—historians, volunteers, and community members who have helped keep the county’s past accessible. That shared approach gives its books and materials a grounded, local character that will especially appeal to readers who enjoy regional history and archival storytelling.
