Born in St. Helier, Jersey, on October 17, 1880, Hereward Carrington became a British-born writer and investigator who later built much of his career in the United States. He was especially drawn to psychical research and spent years examining séances, mediums, and other claims of paranormal phenomena.
Carrington was remarkably prolific, writing more than 100 books and articles on subjects that ranged from psychic investigation and spiritualism to conjuring, stage magic, and alternative health. That range helps explain why his work still feels unusual today: he moved easily between debunking tricks, documenting strange experiences, and arguing for the serious study of claims many people dismissed outright.
He is often remembered as one of the best-known popularizers of psychical research in the early 20th century. Whether approaching a mediumship case, a magical effect, or an unconventional theory, he wrote in a way meant to engage general readers as well as committed believers and skeptics.
