by Here Gerrits van der Veen
Born in Grouw, Friesland, on March 15, 1816, Hjerre Gjerrits van der Veen was a Dutch school headmaster and a Frisian popular writer. He died on September 13, 1887, in Murmerwoude.
He is chiefly remembered for writing that stayed close to the world around him: youth literature, prose, key novels, and religious works, with a strong connection to Frisian language and culture. Alongside his original writing, he also worked as a translator, helping bring more texts into reach for his readers.
That mix of teaching, storytelling, and cultural commitment gives his work its lasting appeal. He stands as one of the 19th-century writers who helped preserve and share Frisian literary life in a form meant to be read and enjoyed by a broad public.
