1870–1948
A Welsh writer and historian with a deep love of books, local history, and the Mediterranean world, he moved easily between scholarship and travel writing. His work ranges from studies of Welsh history to books on Naples and a pair of early speculative novels.

by Herbert M. (Herbert Millingchamp) Vaughan
Born in Cardiganshire, Wales, on 27 July 1870, Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan was educated at Clifton College and Keble College, Oxford. He became known as a Welsh author, historian, and bibliographer, and his independent means allowed him to devote much of his life to writing and historical study.
Vaughan wrote across several fields rather than staying in a single lane. He published work on Welsh history and literature, produced bibliographical and bookplate studies connected with the National Library of Wales, and also wrote travel books shaped by his years in Italy, especially around Naples. That mix of careful research and vivid place-writing gives his work a distinctive character.
He died on 31 July 1948. Today he is remembered not only as a regional historian, but also as a versatile man of letters whose books linked Welsh cultural history, bibliographical scholarship, and a wider European imagination.
