About the author

Born on April 4, 1846, Herbert Gouverneur Ogden was an American geographer, topographer, civil engineer, and cartographer. He spent much of his career with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, work that placed him close to the mapmaking, coastal surveying, and geographic reporting that informed his writing.

Ogden also had ties to the early National Geographic Society, where he served as a vice-president and contributed work including Geography of the Land, an 1891 report published in the National Geographic Magazine. His writing has the direct, informative quality of someone used to explaining the physical world through observation, measurement, and careful detail.

He died on February 25, 1906. Though not widely known today as a literary figure, his books and reports remain interesting for readers drawn to exploration, geography, and the history of American scientific publishing.
