About the author

Born in 1865 and active until his death in 1931, Henry Turner Bailey was an American artist and educator best known for his leadership in art education. He taught and wrote during a period when schools in the United States were rethinking the place of drawing, design, and handwork, and he became an important voice in that conversation.

Bailey is closely associated with the Massachusetts Normal Art School, now Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where he served in a leading role, and he was also known for editing School Arts, a widely read magazine for art teachers. Through his teaching and editorial work, he encouraged the idea that art education should be both practical and deeply connected to daily life.

He was also a painter, and surviving collections of his work show a strong interest in landscape and maritime subjects. Today he is remembered not only for his own artwork, but for the lasting influence he had on generations of teachers and students who encountered art through the systems he helped build.
