Archival and historical sources describe him as a prolific lecturer and publisher whose work focused on art, design, art appreciation, and arts education.

He taught drawing in Massachusetts and served for many years as an agent for the promotion of industrial drawing for the Massachusetts Board of Education. He later became director of the Chautauqua School of Arts and Crafts and edited School Arts Magazine, roles that helped give him a national influence in art education.
