About the author

Born in Evansville, Indiana, in 1853, Henry Turman Byford grew up in a medical family and went on to earn his M.D. from Chicago Medical College in 1873. He built his career in Chicago, where he became known as an obstetrician, gynecologist, surgeon, teacher, and prolific author.

Byford was closely associated with several major medical institutions, including St. Luke’s Hospital, the Woman’s Hospital of Chicago, the Post-Graduate Medical School, and Northwestern’s Woman’s Medical School. His published work shows a strong focus on gynecology and operative treatment, and he wrote both specialist papers and larger teaching texts, including Manual of Gynecology and contributions to An American Text-Book of Gynecology.

He died in 1938 after a long career in medicine. Today he is remembered as part of an important generation of American physicians who helped turn gynecology into a more formal and widely taught medical specialty.
