About the author

Born in Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1855, Henry R. Blaney was an American artist, etcher, and writer whose work crossed between fine art and illustrated books. Museum and library records connect him with printmaking in Boston in the late 19th century, and his surviving work shows a strong interest in architecture, landscape, and scenes from travel.

He is especially known for books such as Old Boston, a collection built around his etchings of historic Boston, and The Golden Caribbean, a travel book he both wrote and illustrated. He also wrote Photogravure, a practical book on photographic printing, which suggests how closely he followed the technical side of image-making as well as the artistic one.

Blaney’s career feels varied and hands-on: he made prints, illustrated his own writing, and left work now held by institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Library of Congress. He died in 1913, but his books and prints still offer a lively record of the places he noticed most closely.
