About the author

Born in Birmingham on 4 January 1810, Henry Noel Humphreys was a British illustrator, author, and scholar whose interests stretched across art, natural history, and antiquities. He studied at King Edward's School, spent time in Italy studying medieval manuscripts, and returned to England around 1840, bringing with him a deep love of historical design and decoration.

Humphreys became especially known in the Victorian period for beautifully illustrated books and for helping popular readers engage with subjects that might otherwise have seemed specialist or remote. He wrote and illustrated works on butterflies, moths, coins, ancient manuscripts, printing, and book ornament, and he was admired for his early use of chromolithography and for his elaborate decorative bindings.

That combination of curiosity and craftsmanship gives his books their lasting appeal. Whether he was writing about insect life or the history of lettering and illumination, he had a way of turning scholarship into something visual, lively, and inviting. He died in London on 10 June 1879.
