by Henry Martyn Cist
Born in 1839, Henry Martyn Cist was an American writer, lawyer, and Union Army officer. He served during the Civil War and later became known for historical writing, especially on the western armies of the Union.
After the war, he built a legal career while continuing to write about military history. His best-known work, The Army of the Cumberland, reflects both firsthand experience and a careful interest in documenting campaigns, commanders, and soldiers.
Cist died in 1902. Today he is remembered mainly for preserving an insider's view of the Civil War, especially the operations of the Army of the Cumberland.
