About the author

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1839, Henry Martyn Cist served in the Union Army during the Civil War, working as a captain and staff officer. After the war, he built a legal career in Cincinnati, but he also devoted significant energy to writing about the conflict he had experienced at close range.

He is most closely associated with The Army of the Cumberland (1882), a concise history that helped shape how later readers understood the western campaigns of the war. He also took an active interest in preserving and interpreting major battlefield sites, especially Chickamauga and Chattanooga, linking his writing with early historical memory work.

Cist died in 1902 while in Rome. Today he is remembered less as a literary stylist than as a careful chronicler whose military service, legal training, and historical interest came together in books that still speak to Civil War readers.
