A senior British Army officer who served in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Second Boer War, he went on to become commander-in-chief in South Africa. His career spanned frontline service, high command, and military writing.
Born on 5 July 1846, Henry John Thoroton Hildyard was a British Army officer whose long career took him from active campaigning to some of the empire’s highest military appointments. He served in the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 and later in the Second Boer War, where he commanded the 5th Division.
Hildyard later became General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Africa, serving from 1905 to 1908. The record of his service shows a steady rise through the ranks and a reputation strong enough to bring him into major leadership roles during a period of intense imperial warfare.
He died on 25 July 1916. Today he is remembered chiefly for his military service and command career, especially his work in Egypt and South Africa.
