About the author

Born in Plattsburgh, New York, Henry Hunt Snelling was an American author, editor, inventor, and early photography advocate. Sources about him differ on his birth year, but reliable references agree that he died on June 24, 1897, after a varied career in writing and publishing.

He is especially remembered for The History and Practice of the Art of Photography (1850), one of the earliest American books to explain the new medium in a practical way. He also edited The Photographic Art-Journal, helping spread photographic knowledge at a time when the field was still young.

Snelling wrote beyond photography as well. His books on gardening, fruit, and household subjects show a talent for making useful knowledge accessible to ordinary readers, which is part of why his work still feels approachable today.
