About the author

Henry Holcomb Bennett (December 5, 1863 – April 30, 1924) was an American writer, journalist, and poet from Chillicothe, Ohio. Reliable sources agree that he studied at Kenyon College, spent time working in Kansas after graduation, and later returned to Chillicothe, where he worked in journalism before turning more fully to creative writing.

He is best known today for the patriotic poem The Flag Goes By, but his career was broader than that single piece. Accounts of his life describe him as a versatile magazine writer who produced poems, short stories, essays, and articles, and some sources also note that he was an artist and illustrator.

Bennett’s reputation now rests mostly on the warmth and directness of his writing. Even in brief biographical records, he comes across as a writer who balanced literary work with everyday newspaper experience, which may help explain why his poems and prose remained approachable to general readers.
