About the author

Born in New York City on March 9, 1859, Henry George Stebbins Noble built his career as a stockbroker and financier. He is best remembered as president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1914 to 1919, a period that included the outbreak of World War I and the Exchange's historic closure in 1914.

That experience gave his writing unusual authority. In The New York Stock Exchange in the Crisis of 1914, he drew on direct knowledge of the decisions, pressures, and financial uncertainty surrounding one of the most dramatic moments in Exchange history.

Noble died in 1946, but his work remains valuable for readers interested in financial history, markets under stress, and the people who managed institutions during moments of sudden upheaval.
