About the author
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1890, Henry Crocker Kittredge graduated from Harvard College in 1912 and began a career in secondary education. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, he joined St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he taught history, became vice-rector, and served as rector from 1947 until his retirement in 1954.
Kittredge maintained a summer home in Barnstable and devoted much of his writing to Cape Cod. His books include Cape Cod: Its People and Their History (1930), Shipmasters of Cape Cod (1935), Mooncussers of Cape Cod (1937), and Barnstable, 1839–1939 (1939). He was elected to the American Antiquarian Society in 1924 and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Yale University in 1954. He died in 1967.
