Henry Crocker Kittredge

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1890, Henry Crocker Kittredge was the son of the Harvard scholar George Lyman Kittredge. He studied at Harvard College and graduated in 1912, then went into secondary education. He also served in World War I before returning to a career in teaching and school leadership.

Kittredge was closely associated with St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he taught for many years and was later chosen as the school’s sixth rector in 1947. Alongside his educational work, he developed a strong interest in the history of Cape Cod, especially its maritime past, and became known as a careful collector and researcher.

He wrote books including Cape Cod: Its People and Their History and Shipmasters of Cape Cod, works remembered for turning archival research into vivid local history. He died in Barnstable, Massachusetts, on February 19, 1967, leaving behind both his books and a substantial collection of historical materials connected to Cape Cod.
