An energetic Anglo-Irish botanist and explorer, he ranged from County Donegal to the Arctic and Palestine, turning fieldwork into books that outlived him. He was also a noted walker and a surprisingly literary figure, editing Shakespeare and Ben Jonson alongside his scientific work.

About the author

Born in 1847 and educated at Trinity College Dublin, Henry Chichester Hart built a reputation as a botanist, naturalist, and explorer. He began surveying the plants of County Donegal while still young, and that long effort led to Flora of the County Donegal, the work he is best remembered for.

Hart joined the British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876 as a naturalist and later worked on an expedition in Palestine in 1883–1884. His interests went well beyond collecting specimens: he was known for climbing and long-distance walking, and one of his remarkable walks to Lugnaquilla became famous enough to be remembered long afterward.

He also had a strong literary side, editing Shakespeare plays for the Arden Shakespeare and works by Ben Jonson for Methuen's Standard Library. Hart died in 1908, leaving behind a life that mixed science, travel, stamina, and scholarship in a way that still feels vivid today.
