About the author

Born on March 12, 1874, Henry Cottrell Rowland was an American surgeon and writer. Alongside his medical career, he wrote fiction for magazines as well as novels, and he became known for energetic popular stories that found a wide audience.

Several of his works were adapted for film, and he was also involved in film production. That crossover from print to screen helps explain his lasting interest: his stories were built for momentum, vivid situations, and strong narrative drive.

Rowland died on June 6, 1933. Though he is not as widely remembered today as some of his contemporaries, his career stands out for the unusual combination of medicine, commercial fiction, and early screen storytelling.
