Henry C. (Henry Cottrell) Rowland

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1874, Henry Cottrell Rowland built an unusual career as both a physician and a fiction writer. He trained in medicine at Yale and served during the Spanish–American War, experiences that helped give his writing a sense of action and lived detail.

Rowland became known for adventure novels and short stories, often with nautical settings or strong elements of suspense. His work appeared in magazines as well as books, and titles such as The Closing Net, The Mountain of Fears, and In the Shadow show his taste for danger, travel, and dramatic turns of fate.

He also had a connection to early cinema: several of his stories were adapted into silent films, and he was involved in film production as well. He died in 1933, but his fiction still offers a lively glimpse of the kind of popular storytelling that once filled magazines, bookstalls, and movie houses.
