About the author

Born in Ohio in 1837, Henry Christopher McCook became an American Presbyterian clergyman, naturalist, and prolific writer. He studied at Jefferson College and Western Theological Seminary, served as a chaplain during the Civil War, and was part of the well-known "Fighting McCooks" family.

McCook is especially remembered for his work as an entomologist and arachnologist. He wrote extensively on ants and spiders, turning careful field observation into books that helped popularize natural history for general readers as well as specialists.

Alongside his science writing, he also published works on religion and history. He died in 1911, leaving behind a body of writing that reflects both scientific curiosity and a strong desire to share knowledge clearly with a wide audience.
