1876–1924
A poet, journalist, diplomat, and politician, he moved through several corners of Portuguese public life while also leaving behind a small but memorable literary mark. Best known for the decadentist poem collection Missa Negra, he is remembered as both a writer and a passionate bibliophile.

by Henrique de Vasconcellos
Born in São Filipe, Cape Verde, in 1876, Henrique Vieira de Vasconcelos built a varied career that joined literature with public service. He became known in Portugal as a diplomat, politician, journalist, and writer, and was closely associated with Afonso Costa during the years of the First Portuguese Republic.
As an author, he is especially linked to decadentist poetry and to Missa Negra, the work most often mentioned alongside his name. Beyond writing, he also held senior responsibilities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and gained a reputation as an important bibliophile, with a notable personal library.
He died in Lisbon in 1924. Clear, suitable portrait images were not readily available from the sources I checked, so no profile image is included here.
