About the author

Born in Karlskrona in 1829, Henrik af Trolle was a Swedish sea officer and novelist. Sources agree that he entered the navy as a young man and later took part in longer and shorter voyages with both naval and merchant ships, experiences that would shape his writing.

He left military service in the 1850s and went on to write novels and tales, many of them colored by seafaring life, travel, and history. He is also described in library and reference sources as having worked as a farmer later in life, giving his career an unusually varied path from officer to sailor, author, and landowner.

Af Trolle died in Listerby in 1886. Though not widely known today outside Swedish literary history, he remains an interesting figure for readers who enjoy older fiction rooted in firsthand knowledge of ships, voyages, and the world beyond Sweden.
