About the author

Born in Geneva in 1821, Henri Frédéric Amiel was a Swiss writer, poet, and philosopher whose life was shaped by study, teaching, and introspection. He became a professor in Geneva and spent much of his career in academic life, but his widest reputation grew from the notebooks he kept over many years.

Those notebooks were published after his death as the Journal Intime, the work for which he is still best known. Rather than telling a dramatic public story, the journal invites readers into a searching inner life, full of sharp observation and honest self-questioning.

Amiel died in 1881, but his writing has endured because it feels so personal and recognizable. Readers continue to return to him for his thoughtful, melancholy voice and for the way he captures the quiet struggle to understand oneself.
