Born in 's-Graveland on June 30, 1823, Hendrik Jan Schimmel grew into a versatile Dutch man of letters whose career included poetry, novels, and plays. He was also active in finance, an unusual path that set him apart from many literary contemporaries.
Schimmel became especially known for historical fiction and drama, and he published some work under the pseudonym Ed. van den Hoeck. His writing helped make him a recognizable name in 19th-century Dutch literature, where he was valued for his storytelling energy and his interest in grand subjects from history.
Later in life, he spent time on spiritualist research as well as literary work. He died in Bussum on November 14, 1906, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both the imagination and the intellectual curiosity of his era.
