About the author

Born in Rotterdam on January 26, 1667, Hendrick Zwaardecroon entered service with the Dutch East India Company in 1684 and traveled to Asia while still a young man. Over the years he advanced through a series of colonial administrative posts, building the experience that eventually carried him to the top of the VOC hierarchy.

Zwaardecroon served as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1718 to 1725. Sources describe him as a capable but hard-edged official who dealt with smuggling and company finances while also encouraging the cultivation of export crops and broader trade, including commerce with China.

He died in Batavia on August 12, 1728. Today he is mainly remembered as one of the senior figures of the VOC era, tied to the growth of Dutch colonial power in Southeast Asia and to the economic policies that shaped Java in the early eighteenth century.
