About the author

Little biographical information is easy to confirm online, but reliable library and literary catalog records agree that Hemetério Arantes lived from 1864 to 1932 and was a Portuguese writer. He is generally described as a poet, critic, and historian of literature.

The works most clearly documented today show a writer with broad literary interests. His Livro de Maria appeared in 1898 as a book of verse, and Frei Agostinho da Cruz followed in 1909. In 1915, he published Ramalho Ortigão, a short study of the noted Portuguese man of letters Ramalho Ortigão.

Taken together, these surviving records suggest an author drawn both to poetry and to literary appreciation: someone interested not only in creating verse, but also in interpreting the lives and work of other writers for his readers.
