About the author

Born in Mäntsälä on September 14, 1898, and later known as Helvi Gyllenberg after her 1920 marriage, she was a Finnish playwright. Reliable library and encyclopedia sources identify her specifically as a dramatist, and her life ended young in Kulosaari on December 31, 1927.

Her best-known work is Kuningasverta, a two-act historical play first published in 1920. The play has remained accessible through later library records and public-domain editions, which has helped preserve her name even though her body of work was small.

Because she died at just 29, her writing career was short. Even so, she remains part of Finland’s literary record as an early 20th-century dramatist whose work continues to be cataloged and read.
