About the author

Born in Indianapolis in June 1854, she moved to California in 1874 with her family after her father, Dr. Thomas B. Elliott, became involved with the Indiana Colony that helped found Pasadena. She later married Arturo Bandini in 1883, linking her life to one of California’s old Spanish families as well as to the fast-changing world of Southern California at the turn of the century.

She wrote for newspapers and magazines, took part in civic and arts activities, and became known especially for writing about California’s past. Her best-known book, History of California (1908), was written in a clear, accessible style for younger readers, while still aiming to make the state’s story lively and memorable. She also wrote Chumash Courage, a historical tale for juvenile readers.

She died in Pasadena on June 10, 1911. No suitable confirmed portrait image was found from the pages reviewed during this search, so no profile image is included here.
