About the author

Born Laura Ella Cody in 1850, she was the younger sister of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody and later became known as Helen Cody Wetmore. She married Duluth newspaper owner Hugh A. Wetmore in 1893 and became closely tied to the city’s energetic business and civic circles.

She is best known as the author of Last of the Great Scouts, a biography of her brother first published in 1899. Because she wrote from inside the Cody family, the book offered readers a personal view of one of the most famous figures of the American West.

Accounts of her life in Duluth also describe her as active in public causes, including support for women’s advancement. That mix of family connection, local influence, and firsthand storytelling gives her work a distinct place in the history of Western biography.
