About the author

Heikki Toppila was born on July 4, 1885, in Paavola, an area now part of Siikajoki, Finland. He came from an old farming family in Liminka, but his interest in culture led him away from farm work and toward education. He graduated as a primary-school teacher from the Kajaani teacher-training seminary in 1907.

Toppila’s childhood in Liminka, the stories he heard growing up, and the open landscapes of the region strongly influenced his writing. He became known for novels and story collections including Auringon nousun maahan, Helvetin koira, Päästä meidät pahasta, Nuoruuden kujanjuoksu, and Tarinat.

Heikki Toppila died on April 5, 1963, in Kuusankoski. His work remains part of Finnish literary history, particularly for its strong sense of place and its preservation of local storytelling traditions.
