About the author

Born in Edinburgh in 1888, Hector Copland Macpherson was a Scottish Church of Scotland minister, astronomer, and science writer. A serious childhood illness meant he was educated at home for several years, and that early period helped spark a lasting fascination with astronomy.

Macpherson became known for writing about astronomy in a way that welcomed non-specialists. His books included Through the Depths of Space, Astronomers of To-day and Their Work, Makers of Astronomy, and Biographical Dictionary of Astronomy, showing both his love of the subject and his interest in the lives of the people who shaped it.

Alongside his ministry, he remained active in astronomical circles and was recognized by learned societies including the Royal Astronomical Society. He died in 1956, leaving behind a body of work that helped make the history and ideas of astronomy more approachable for ordinary readers.
