About the author

Born in Portland, Maine, on April 8, 1898, Hazel Hutchins Wilson built her early career around books before becoming a writer herself. Available biographical sources describe her as a graduate of Bates College and Simmons College who worked as a school and college librarian.

She later taught as a lecturer at George Washington University and went on to write more than fifteen children's books. Her best-known work is the Herbert series, a group of humorous stories said to have grown out of the real-life antics of her son and his friends.

Wilson's writing reflects the eye of someone who understood young readers well: clear, spirited, and grounded in the small dramas of childhood. She died on August 20, 1992.
