About the author

Born in Dover on 3 June 1833, Hawley Smart served in the British Army before becoming a novelist. He fought in the Crimean War, later served in India during the Indian Mutiny, and also spent time in Canada before leaving the army in the 1860s.

He began publishing fiction with Breezie Langton in 1869, a novel noted for its Crimean War setting. Over the course of his career he wrote 38 novels, many first appearing in magazines or newspaper serials, and became especially known for stories of society life, the military, racing, and hunting.

Readers valued the lively realism of his sporting and military scenes, which were often shaped by personal experience. He died on 8 January 1893 at Budleigh Salterton in Devon. No suitable verified portrait image was found during this search, so no profile image is included.
