About the author

Born in Henry County, Iowa, in 1875, Harvey Ellsworth Newbranch later made his life and career in Nebraska. He studied at the University of Nebraska, where he was part of the same campus world as Willa Cather, and went on to become a prominent newspaper editor.

Newbranch spent much of his working life with the Omaha World-Herald, where he was known as an influential editorial voice. He also wrote William Jennings Bryan: A Concise But Complete Story of His Life and Services, a short biography that reflects his close interest in public affairs and in one of Nebraska's most famous political figures.

He died in Omaha in 1959. Although he is not widely read today, his work offers a useful glimpse into early twentieth-century journalism and the political culture of the American Midwest.
