Born in Koblenz in 1845 and later active in Austria, Hartmann Grisar was a German-speaking Jesuit priest and church historian. Reference sources on his life describe him as a scholar of church history who studied theology at Innsbruck, was ordained in 1868, and went on to teach and research within the Jesuit world.
Grisar is best remembered for his historical writing on Martin Luther, as well as for studies connected with Rome, the papacy, and Christian antiquity. He spent much of his career working carefully with historical sources, and his books helped make him a notable Catholic historian of his era.
He died in Innsbruck in 1932 at the age of 86. Today he is mainly remembered by readers interested in church history, Reformation studies, and Catholic scholarship from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
