About the author

Born in Grouville, Jersey, in 1870, Harry Vardon rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most celebrated golfers of his era. He turned professional in the late 19th century and became part of golf’s famous “Great Triumvirate” alongside J.H. Taylor and James Braid.

Vardon won The Open Championship six times, a record that still stands, and added the 1900 U.S. Open to his list of major victories. He was admired for a graceful, dependable swing and for popularizing the overlapping hold now widely known as the Vardon grip, which influenced generations of players.

His fame reached far beyond Britain, especially through exhibition tours and championship play in the United States, helping make golf more widely followed on both sides of the Atlantic. He died in 1937, but his place in the sport’s history remains secure, and he was later inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
