About the author

Born in London on 6 March 1877, Harold E. Palmer became known as an English linguist, phonetician, and one of the early pioneers of teaching English as a second language. He is especially associated with oral approaches to language learning, with a strong focus on spoken English, pronunciation, and practical classroom method.

Palmer worked to make language teaching more systematic and effective. His books and teaching ideas aimed to connect linguistic study with everyday classroom practice, and later scholars have regarded him as an important early influence on applied linguistics.

He also spent many years in Japan, where he played a major role in reforming English education and extending his influence internationally. Palmer died on 16 November 1949, but his work remains part of the history of modern English language teaching.
