About the author

Born in Gramsbergen on December 1, 1810, Harm Boom began his working life in education. Sources describe him first as a teacher and later as a shopkeeper in Coevorden before he moved fully into journalism, a path that took him through newspapers in places including The Hague, Zwolle, Utrecht, and Assen.

Boom became an important figure in 19th-century Drenthe's literary and journalistic world. He wrote in and about the region, worked on almanacs and newspapers, and is closely linked with the trio known as De Drie Podagristen, whose travel writing and cultural interest helped encourage the study of Drenthe's language, history, and everyday life.

He died in Assen on June 12, 1885. Although he is not widely known outside regional literary history, the sources consistently present him as a lively and influential voice in Drenthe's cultural life, remembered both for his journalism and for helping shape an early regional literature.
