A skilled Yorkshire angler and civic leader, he is best remembered for helping preserve and explain the North Country tradition of trout fishing. His classic work on fly dressing and streamcraft has remained a touchstone for generations of fly fishers.

by Harfield H. Edmonds, Norman N. Lee
Born in Bradford in December 1882, he was educated at Salt’s Grammar School in Shipley, where he formed a lasting friendship with Norman N. Lee. The two later collaborated on Brook and River Trouting (1916), a detailed guide to North Country trout fishing that combined practical instruction with careful attention to traditional flies and materials.
That book became his best-known work and is still valued as an important contribution to angling literature. Modern editions and digital archives have helped keep it in print, introducing new readers to his clear, experience-based approach to river fishing.
Beyond writing, he also played a public role in Bradford. Records from Bradford Council list Harfield Henry Edmonds as serving as Lord Mayor of Bradford from 1953 to 1956. He died in 1956.
