About the author

Born in Barmen, Germany, on December 17, 1911, Hans Walter Wolff was a German Protestant theologian who became one of the best-known Old Testament scholars of his time. He taught at the University of Mainz from 1959 to 1967 and then served as Professor of Old Testament at the University of Heidelberg until 1978.

Wolff wrote influential studies and commentaries on biblical books including Hosea, Joel, Amos, Micah, and Jonah. Readers still turn to his work for its careful scholarship and its gift for making difficult biblical texts feel alive and meaningful.

He died in Heidelberg on October 22, 1993. Publisher and reference sources describe him not only as a scholar, but also as a pastor, which helps explain the warm, thoughtful tone many readers find in his writing.
