About the author

Born on December 16, 1879, in Unterhaid in southern Bohemia, Hans Watzlik was a German-Bohemian writer and teacher whose work was closely tied to the Bohemian Forest region. Reference sources describe him as a novelist, storyteller, and poet, and note that he spent part of his life teaching before becoming widely known for his writing.

His books are especially associated with the landscapes, legends, and village life of the Böhmerwald, or Šumava. That strong regional focus made him an important literary voice connected with the area, and many readers came to know the region through his historical tales, imaginative stories, and nature-filled settings.

Watzlik died on November 24, 1948, in Tremmelhausen near Regensburg. Today he is remembered above all as a prolific author whose work kept the culture and atmosphere of the Bohemian Forest alive in German-language literature.
